EQ3 Equalizing Double Planer
Newman Machine Company is proud to introduce the first double planer that properly prepares the board and provides an improved divided cut over existing self-centering, opposed cut planers.
Defects that are common to the species, those that are introduced thru sawing, drying and/or handling all combine to affect the quality and yield of the surfaced board. While removing an equal amount of material from the top and bottom surfaces can be advantageous, most planed boards will yield more usable lumber of higher quality if the surfaces can be equalized prior to finish planing.
Description
Newman Machine Company is proud to introduce the first double planer that properly prepares the board and provides an improved divided cut over existing self-centering, opposed cut planers.
Defects that are common to the species, those that are introduced thru sawing, drying and/or handling all combine to affect the quality and yield of the surfaced board. While removing an equal amount of material from the top and bottom surfaces can be advantageous, most planed boards will yield more usable lumber of higher quality if the surfaces can be equalized prior to finish planing.
The Newman EQ3 Equalizing Double Planer takes rough surfacing to the next level with increased yield, higher quality finish and fewer defects.
The EQ3 Equalizing Double Planer includes an upstream Equalizing Module and a down- stream EPR Planer that work together to equalize the stock removal from the upper and lower surfaces of a board. The inventive aspect is the Equalizing Module that includes a single cutterhead with a combination pivoting arm and press roll that control an amount of material removed by the first bottom cutterhead.
In use, thin boards that fit through the gap between the Automatic Cut ControlTM and the press roll move through the upstream section and are diverted by the Automatic Cut Control™ away from the cutterhead without any material being removed from the bottom surface of the board. Boards that are too thick to fit through the gap, contact against the press roll causing the Automatic Cut ControlTM to pivot downward. The amount of pivoting of the Automatic Cut ControlTM depends upon the thickness of the board and determines the amount of material removed from the bottom surface of the board. For boards above a predetermined thickness, the Automatic Cut Control™ pivots downward to a predetermined position causing a maximum amount of material to be removed from the bottom surface. An oversized board will force the press roll upward away from the Automatic Cut Control™ and cutterhead to allow the board to move through the upstream section.
Standard Features
- Automatic Cut Control™ : The A.C.C. is a sectional, mechanical device designed and developed by Newman Machine Company to offset the fixed bottom head cut found on conventional knife planers. This device provides more equal cut distribution between the top and bottom cutterheads. Varying bottom head cut provides more equal distribution of hit-and-miss surfaces on both sides of the lumber which results in increased yield and lumber grade improvement.
- Anti-Lap Device: This unique patented device offers automatic, foolproof protection against oversize stock and under lapped or over lapped boards entering the planer, which increases productivity. A hand wheel control sets thickness limits and makes possible automatic feeding by conveyor or feed table.
Optional Features
- Anti-kickback Fingers: Anti-kickback fingers are required when hand feeding the machine. Unit is equipped with an air quick release when reverse is selected.
- Digital Thickness Positioning: This optional automated positioning system for the top head allows for fast, easy and very accurate setup. Lumber thickness is entered into the PLC and the top head automatically moves to that position. If the need arises and the top head is moved during a run, it will automatically reset to the previous position once read to resume running lumber. Recalibration is simple and easy after grinding or jointing.
- Outfeed Pinch Rolls: Pinch roll unit is used to feed lumber out of the planer and onto cross transfer chains or a round table. A 3 hp AC variable frequency drive powers the rolls.
Advantages of the Newman EQ3 Equalizing Double Planer
- Three cutterheads: bottom first (conditioning head), and top and bottom finishing heads.
- Newman Automatic Cut Control™ on both bottom cutterheads.
- The patent pending Equalizing Cut Control Module prepares the board to improve finishing quality.
- The patent pending Equalizing Cut Control Module provides an improved divided cut over existing self-centering, opposed cut machines.
- Increased lumber yield up to 10% over conventional double planers.
- Produces a higher quality finish with fewer defects and reduced splitting of cupped lumber.
- Improved board surface for optimizing scanners.
